"Being hired as superintendent at Olde York is a great opportunity for me," said Soldo. "I have inherited a knowledgeable staff...and I expect this to be a fulfilling and satisfying experience." By the second week of July the dryject holes in the greens had almost finished healing. From this, improved green firmness can already be detected. The next step to improving ball roll will begin this week and continue bi-monthly in the alteration of verticutting and topdressing. Verticutting, which is the process of vertically slicing the green, will remove excess thatch and the sponginess from the green. Topdressing also decreases thatch and smoothes the surface for truer ball roll. Topdressing of tees will be a priority for the remainder of this season. This process will help decrease the thatch layer that has accumulated in the tees. While some thatch is necessary for healthy turf, our tees have too much, resulting in decreased water penetration to the roots. Reducing the thatch layer will allow water to reach the roots. We have also begun eliminating many of the natural areas around tees and along fairways. Our goal is to create a fair golf experience for our members and guests. |

I would like to congratulate the winners of the Mens’ and Ladies’ President’s Cup, Ed Drag and Mary Pucciarelli. The tournament was spread out over the month of June making it a true test of endurance. These two players played very competitive matches all the way to the end, each including a 36-hole final match. Ed Drag had to use all 36 holes before outlasting Neil Brodsky who also had an excellent run throughout the tournament. Mary Pucciarelli defeated Patty Bongiorno who put in a late charge to make the match even more interesting. Congratulations again to Ed and Mary and enjoy those parking spots!
Golf Tips: Three Putt Territory What is your set make-up? Do you have a traditional set make-up including a driver, 3-wood and 3-iron through pitching wedge? Do you hit each of those clubs a different distance or do some clubs overlap in yardage? A majority of golfers carry 14 clubs, but only 11 or 12 clubs are being used on a regular basis. Each club in your bag should have a purpose. If you hit your 3-wood and 5-wood the same distance, it doesn't make any sense to carry both clubs. Pick one and take the other out. In its place, put another wedge in your bag. I guarantee that you will use that wedge more often than the club you take out. The same circumstance can be applied to a 3-iron and 4-iron. I took my 3-iron out of my bag six years ago. In its place, I put a 52° wedge to compliment my 56° wedge and 60° wedge. I would hit my 3-iron about 210 yards, but very rarely would I have an opportunity to use that club. Alternatively, I hit my 52° wedge 110 yards or if I want to keep the ball low I can take a shorter swing to hit it fewer yards. Wedges are much more versatile clubs than 3-irons. I can honestly say that every club in my bag has a purpose, can you? |
